A strange creature is wandering the forests of the Pacific-northwest. Rusty and Catha Baughman travel to Pacifica under the orders of the Paladin to investigate some highly illegal genetic engineering. They discover government officials who seem completely ignorant of what might be happening. And they meet a chief scientist who seems too agreeable and perhaps naive. What they found was something much more exciting and frightening.

Ward Wagher's latest short story explores the unintended results of a quantum tunneling experiment. The year is 2467 AD. At the Urbana Quantum Physics Laboratory, in the Upper Midwest Palatinate, a group of scientists achieve startling results to their research. The attempt to generate a temporal link dragged an historical character into their world. The scientists frantically try to discover the source of the error, while the traveler from a far place struggles to orient himself with wonders he could never have dreamed of. The arrival of the paladin, who rules the palatinate, brings focus to the problem. In the end, it is the paladin who must deal with this intractible problem.
